This is part of the New Song Series, short choruses I’ve been writing from Scripture, meant to encourage, steady the heart, and point us back to God.
“I love You, O Lord, my strength.
The Lord is my rock and my fortress and my deliverer…” (Psalm 18)
These are not quiet words.
They come from a man who had been surrounded, hunted, and pressed on every side. David writes this after being delivered: From Saul, from his enemies, from real life threatening danger.
He must have known what it was like to have nowhere else to turn. And that’s why his words carry weight:
“The Lord is my rock… my fortress… my savior.”
This was not just an idea neither a distant hope. Rather a place he actually ran to, where his thoughts would be taken captive by truth, his anxieties settled, his fears overcome with an eternal promise.
And this song gives an answer to a simple but important question:
When everything closes in… where do we run?
Because we will all face moments like that. Pressure, temptation, fear, confusion, and the list goes on of things that keep us from sleeping like a child who knows that their Father has got it all under control.
In the situations where we feel outmatched or overwhelmed. Psalm 18 reminds us that we are not left without refuge, but in God we can rely. And Oh how much I need these words to bring rest to my soul!
“The Lord is my rock, in whom I take refuge,
my shield, and the horn of my salvation, my stronghold.” (Psalm 18:2)
I have felt the Lords hand at work, protecting me from and within circumstances. Holding me steady in the middle of them, keeping my feet grounded when I would certainly be spinning out of control.
The same God who delivered David is the One who has come to us in Jesus Christ.
He has rescued us from sin.
He strengthens us against temptation.
He delivers us from the power of the enemy.
And He invites us to come to Him; not just once, but again and again. And again! And that why this song is here, for you to come to Him again. Or maybe for the first time?
So when you feel surrounded… when you don’t know where to turn…
Run to Him.
Not to the noise of opinion, Not to your own strength.
To Him.
Because Jesus is still our rock, He is Still our refuge,
And our savior.
