A new song : The wonder of mercy and judgement, Psalm 98

Find hope through tough times

Psalm 98 draws us into the wonder of God.

“Oh sing to the Lord a new song, for He has done marvelous things.”

This psalm builds steadily toward a powerful climax: The coming of the Lord. It opens our eyes to the beauty of His promises and His unwavering faithfulness: that He will come to save, to rescue us from evil, to overthrow darkness, and to restore light to His creation once more.

And as witnesses to such wonder, creation itself cannot remain silent. The seas roar, the rivers clap their hands, the mountains sing for joy. All of creation joins with His people in a chorus of praise to the One who is coming.

In this, we begin to see something deeper: the worthiness of God alone to judge the earth. And at the same time, we are confronted with our own unworthiness. How can I cast a stone at another for their wrong, when I myself fall so far short of God’s purpose and plan?

So the question rises—who, then, is worthy?

Who is worthy to open the scroll on the day of judgment?

Only One: Jesus Christ.

He took upon Himself the weight and sin of the world. The One who will come to judge is the very One who first came to rescue. Justice and mercy meet in Him. Selah

“Oh sing to the Lord a new song, for He has done marvelous things.”

Let the whole earth join in praise.

For He has appointed a day on which He will judge the world in righteousness by the Man whom He has ordained. He has given assurance of this to all by raising Him from the dead.” (Acts 17:31)

This chorus above is not the full song—but may it lift our eyes. Enough to remind us that He is able to help us in our time of need.
