There was a time in my life where I felt so condemned I could not lift my hands to worship God, a voice of accusation kept me bound and I felt just like the Israelites; paralysed before a mocking Goliath. But thanks to the Lord - the little faith I had, found His heart and purpose for my life once more ... This song speaks of God’s will and how like David we are called to act upon it. David must have been scared and overwhelmed by doubts … but the faith to do God’s will won the day in his heart.
When I see the proverbial giant of ‘modern society’ that threatens my faith, family, values and community; challenging what I trust and love. When being weak-at-the-knees is the default option - this song encourages me to walk in God’s will as David did.
The threat however is not always a clearly visible pompous Goliath, it can be much more subtle, luring us into a trap like a fish to the bait. A sly temptation aimed to penetrate the heart and gnaw at it’s faith by bringing compromise and desire for the things of the world.
David faced both, and I want to remember not only his sling and stone, but his weaknesses and errors, his heart and his faith in God.
Later in his life David fell into sin that could have destroyed him if not for his heart for God, and this is the heart that the new covenant ask of each believer. A repentant heart, ready to humbly accept consequences … a heart that feared and loved God and sought to do His will.
For me the sling and stone represent God’s will in whatever situation we are facing, despite feeble hands and weak knees - the little bit of faith brings us to step out, as David did, and do what God asks of us.
Some verses that inspired the song:
“Make the weak hands strong and make the feeble knees sure. Say to those of a hasty heart, Be strong, fear not; behold, your God will come with vengeance, with the full dealing of God. He will come and save you”. Isaiah 35: 3-4
“Then David said to the Philistine, "You come to me with a sword, with a spear, and with a javelin. But I come to you in the name of the LORD of hosts, the God of the armies of Israel, whom you have defied”. 1 Samuel 17:45
