The High Priest, Caiaphas: At the last day of Sukkot (The Feast of Tabernacles) 29AD
Each morning of the festival, the people gather at the Temple. The water-pouring ritual, a central act of the feast, begins as a priest draws water from the Pool of Siloam, carrying it up to the Temple in a golden pitcher. The crowds follow, singing Psalms of praise, especially from Isaiah: “With joy you will draw water from the wells of salvation.” The water, mixed with wine, is poured out on the altar as a thank offering to God, not just for the rain that sustains life but as a plea for the rains to come in the approaching winter season. Rain, in the ancient Hebrew mind, represents the life-giving provision of God, necessary for survival and growth. Water symbolizes sustenance, renewal, and life itself.
Yet, this day feels different.
The last and great day of the feast swells with meaning. The priests are making their final circuits, the altar is prepared, and the people await the pouring of the water. Their prayers, their hopes for a fruitful season, their memories of wandering in the desert all hang in the air. But in the midst of this sacred moment, a voice rises above the crowd. It is not the voice of a priest. It is not a sound from the official ceremony. It is the voice of Jesus, cutting through the prayers and murmurs.
“If anyone is thirsty, let him come to Me and drink.”
“I watched from my place of honor, observing the rituals we had carefully preserved for generations. The feast was sacred, the day holy, and yet there He stood, disrupting everything with His reckless words. “Living water.” It was blasphemy, pure and simple. How dare He suggest that He, this man from Galilee, could provide what only God can? But even as I felt the anger rise in me, I could see the people turning toward Him, their faces filled with something I couldn’t quite place. Hope, maybe. I had to stop Him before they all believed Him. ”
