The last day of Sukkot (The Feast of Tabernacles) 29AD
The voice of Jesus cut through the prayers and murmurs, interrupting the most meaningful moment of the feast of Tabernacles. The water that symbolizes Gods provision and life to the people of Israel, is being poured out:
“If anyone is thirsty, let him come to Me and drink.”
Jesus’ words cause a stir. The people turn to see who would dare speak such things, here in the heart of the Temple, during this most sacred moment. But Jesus does not stop.
“Whoever believes in Me, as the Scripture has said, rivers of living water will flow from within him.”
This is no ordinary claim. The weight of these words falls heavy. The people know their Scriptures, and they know what water means- life! In the desert climate, water is more than a metaphor; it is the difference between death and survival. They have seen the water poured out, symbolizing their dependence on God, but now this man claims to be the source of living water? To be able to quench the deepest thirst?
Avelah, a struggling hebrew mom, shares her account:
“I was just trying to get my little ones through the crowd when I heard his voice. “If anyone thirsts, let him come to Me!” He called out like He was speaking to me personally, I was thirsty- not for water, but for hope. Life had been hard- too hard- and I didn’t know how much longer I could keep going. But the way He spoke, it was like He knew. He knew my pain, my struggles, and He offered something I didn’t even realise I needed. Until now.”

Like this video illustrates, Moses lead the people of Israel through the desert, where God miraculously provided for them in every way. It was a picture of the Christ who would come and provide the need of every people, tribe and tongue. The need for forgiveness, the need for life, the need to be made right with a righteouss God, the need for the hope that oneday all the wrongs will be made right. This is what Jesus the Christ fulfilled.
